The History and Evolution of the ABI Cohort Team

This journey began in September 2024, when this group of players first came together on the court.  By March 2025, they stepped into competition for the first time, posting scores of 25-3, 18-4, and 20-6.  The showing was weak and they needed more practice. 

The team returned to the gym, training three days a week through June 2025. That hard work paid off at the Panhandle Basketball Port City Classic, where the team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the championship game to take home the title. They closed out the summer at the End of Summer Bash, finishing the season 6–4 with one championship trophy.  We immediately went back to work.

Winter brought a new test as five ABI players took their development into their local city leagues:

• Foley: Jonny and Deacon
• Spanish Fort: Cade
• Gulf Shores: Conner and Finn
• ABI Training: Jovan remained in the gym, maintaining a rigorous three-day-a-week training schedule.

By the end of the city league season, Jonny, Finn, and Conner had each captured league championships, while Cade earned a 3rd-place finish.

Reconvening in February 2026, the team set its sights on the spring circuit. At the Spring Break Bash in April, the team demonstrated remarkable growth. Rather than dropping three straight games as they did in earlier stages of development, the players battled through tough competition to secure a 2nd-place finish.

That doesn't happen by accident; it is the direct result of structure, consistency, and a long-term development model. A dominant GCPC team exposed key tactical areas for improvement, it gave our coaching staff  data to refine our curriculum. At ABI, we compete not just to win, but to evaluate, refine, and grow. High performance is simply the byproduct of that process.

ABI wrapped up the summer season with an 11–7 record, earning three silver medals and one bronze.

Practice is ongoing as city league play approaches again in November. Time moves quickly: in just two summers, these young athletes will be stepping onto middle school courts as fully developed players.

To meet that standard, the Alabama Basketball Institute is evolving. We are transitioning from a traditional training company into a true basketball research and development institute dedicated to long-term athlete growth, performance tracking, and proven systems.

This year, we are launching two foundational initiatives:

1. The ABI Combine: Objective physical and skill testing to benchmark growth over time.
2. The GCR Athlete Lab: A scientific framework to measure and develop GRIT, Confidence, and Resilience (GCR) in every athlete.

We are building more than just basketball players.  We are engineering complete athletes prepared for the next level.
